Fun in Castle Rock!

Today we got up early (some probably due to the time change) and got a start on a busy but very fun day.  We toured all through Castle Rock and saw about everything you could see.  We really like it here, especially the weather (dry but not too hot).  There is a huge fire burning south of hear near Colorado Springs so you could smell some of the smoke and the mountains were a little obscured from the haze.

We hiked up Castle Rock (hence the name of the city) and looked out over the valley.  It really brings back memories of being out west!  🙁  We sure miss it.

While on our hike we took a lot of pictures of each other, the scenery, and we even got some great shots of wildlife…

Yes, the picture above is real.  It’s a zoom shot of the nesting area.  You could hear the babies wanting their mom as she squawked as well.  Pretty cool!

We are going to get some good sleep tonight!  🙂

Leave for Summer Trip!

Today we left for our summer vacation/family reunion/baptism event/college prep trip.  🙂  We decided to leave a couple days earlier and today, we started off early and drove to Denver.  We will be staying until Sunday afternoon with the Liddell family, our friends from the Naperville 2nd Ward who moved to Denver back in February.  The drive went well and the kids were really good.  We are so blessed to have kids who don’t whine and cry on trips!  🙂

We arrived in Denver this evening and it was good to see the Liddell’s and catch up with them on how things have been since they moved. We have a fun-filled and packed day tomorrow, so we’ll get some sleep!  🙂

Kirstyn Summer Chorus Concert

Today we went and saw Kirstyn’s Summer Chorus Concert at Metea.  The kids had been working really hard all week to put on this concert at the end of their summer music experience.  They did a GREAT job!  It never ceases to amaze me at how good the  music program in our district is.

The kids memorized so many songs, and they had ensembles of just the guys, just the girls, other combinations, and instruments to boot.  Great job Kirstyn!  We’re proud of you!

EFY Over, Kayaking, and Cirque du Soleil

Well, EFY is now over and I drove down to Normal IL to pick up Brittany and some other folks that went down.  That’s one of my favorite things to do.  It’s great driving back home listening to all the fun stories and such from the kids.  🙂  The only thing I don’t like is getting up and leaving at 4:30am to get down there to pick them up at 7am.  🙂

After we got home, I took a rest, cleaned a bit, and then we drove downtown for a little kayaking adventure and Cirque du Soleil entertainment.  Angela had found a Groupon for kayaking on the Chicago river for a really good deal, so 6 of us got tickets and went.

It was a lot of fun.  This was Angela’s first time in a kayak and so she and I got a tandem one.  The kayaking was actually an architecture tour while on the Chicago river.  We would paddle around the river, stop at specific places, and our guide would tell us about the buildings and such.  I had been on an architecture tour before, but not this way.  The kayaking was awesome (as long you don’t fall into the river which is really gross and dirty).  🙂

It was actually pretty good exercise!  We were out on the river for almost 4 hours!  We think we’ll do that again!  Only one person ended up swamping his kayak and that was because he thought he was really cool and was goofing around.  Some people are just not the sharpest tool in the shed.  We about gagged when he went under.  🙂

After our kayaking adventure, we drove over to Navy Pier and went to a great performance from Cirque du Soleil.  It was called Cirque Shanghai: Year of the Dragon.  It was really cool and we had a great time!  The acrobatics and balancing acts were amazing!  It was really cool and crazy at the same time.  Who would think to have 6 motorcycles going around and around a metal sphere at the same time without hitting each other.

After the performance, we walked around for awhile and tried to find something to eat for dinner.  We were all pretty hungry.  Navy Pier was totally crammed with people, so we decided to walk back toward the lots where we parked to find something.  We ended up eating in a hotel restaurant but it was really good.  Maybe it was because we were so hungry.  🙂  We got home pretty late and after getting up at 4 to get ready to leave, I was totally ready to crash!  🙂  What a great day, though!!!

Baptism Interview and New/Old Friends

Today, Zachary had his baptism interview with the Bishop.  He is so excited to get baptized!  We also dressed him up and took pictures for his announcement.

We also got a call from Brittany this morning and she said she met this “really hot” guy down at EFY and she said his name was Baxter.  I about fell of my chair and she was really freaked out as to why!  Turns out that “her” Baxter is Baxter Bruner, the son of some friends of ours who used to be in our ward WAY back when in Naperville!  We used to babysit him and Sarah and him would play together (or what playing 2 year old toddlers can do).  🙂  That really freaked her out that we knew the kid.  🙂  Small world!  When his mom and dad found out that from him, they thought it was pretty funny as well.  They live up in Kenosha Wisconsin now.  🙂  Sounds like Brittany’s having a blast!  🙂

Brittany met Baxter Bruner.

Summer Chorus Starts!

Today Kirstyn started a summer chorus program at Metea Valley High School.  It is for all the middle schools in the district to give them practice and prepare them for the next year.  Our district is great at doing these kinds of programs and it is wonderful to see how much time and effort they give to the arts.  It’s no wonder our Music program is one of the best in the nation!  Best of luck, Kirstyn!  We know you’ll do great!

Off to EFY!

Today, Brittany went off to EFY in Normal, IL.  She is SO excited!  Initially we weren’t going to let her go because she is saving money for her Florida road-trip with the Marching Band during Christmas Break, but we gave in and decided to let her go.  She comes back acting so nice and has such a spiritual lift about her.  We hope that this year will be the same and she will have a great and spiritually strong experience!   Good luck Britt!

Youth Conference

Over the last 2 days, Brittany has been participating in our Stake Youth Conference.  She really enjoyed it.  It’s weird now that Sarah “too grown up” for that kind of thing.  Having only 1 daughter attend is strange.  Next year, Kirstyn will be able to go.  This year, Youth Conference was centered around a Book of Mormon theme with “Book of Mormon families” created.  They had a lot of great lessons, activities, and of course, Brittany enjoyed the dance.  She also talked a lot about the testimony meeting which built her up and made her happy!  It’s so wonderful that our youth have programs like this!  Where else can they be spiritually built up, hang out and have fun with a whole bunch of kids that have their same standards and morals, and talk about “religious stuff” openly without being poked fun at!

Brittany Sweet 16 Party!

Today, Brittany had her sweet 16 birthday party!  We spent a lot of time planning and getting ready for this, and she invited about 70 people!  We had the party at Waubonsie Lake Park in a newly constructed and very nice pavilion with a fireplace, a great amount of space, and overlooking the lake.  It really is a nice place to have a party.  🙂

We brought a full sound system which all the kids loved and had a great time picking the songs they wanted to hear from the iPad, a screen, projector, the Wii (which we didn’t end up using due to the breeze), and kicked off the party with hot dogs over the fire, chips, drinks, and all kinds of other stuff.  The kids all really enjoyed the location and they loved the adjacent kiddie playground just as much!

We had games set up and the kids came up with their own games, hung out, and enjoyed each other’s company.  We then roasted marshmallows and ate cake and had ice cream.  Sarah made a really cool cake for Brittany that everybody thought was awesome!

We then took group pictures and the kids hung out for awhile longer, dance, played more games, and had more fun.

Overall, there were about 45 people that came.  We had a few leave before the group pic and a couple come afterward, but we tried to get everyone in the picture that we could.  Brittany had a great time and it will be a time that she won’t forget.  Fortunately, sweet 16 comes around only once!  🙂

Happy Sweet 16 Brittany!

EEP Camp, ARTSpeaks BBQ, and Swimming

Today was a busy day in our household!  Kirstyn started her 2nd year of Engineering Camp at Northern Illinois University and is looking forward to a great week.  She’s going to the camp with Ashley Smith, one of her best friends, so they should have a wonderful time.

Ben and Zach also started swimming lessons.  They were so excited yesterday when we were talking about it!  They absolutely LOVE water and are not quite to where they could live in it, but they sure want to!  🙂  They did a great job their first day and Zach is now talking about doing swimming on a team rather than football.  He seems pretty serious about it so he may not play this fall.  We’ll see.

Tonight, Angela and I went over to Chip Staley’s house (the fine arts chair at Neuqua Valley High School in our district) for an ARTSpeaks group BBQ and meeting.  We had a wrap-up discussion about the results of the Fine Arts Festival and what we heard and learned from attendees there.  It was great to hear what had happened at the other 2 schools as well.  We then had dinner and relaxed outside in their huge back yard.  They have cool planter boxes and Angela ribbed me for not building some for us.  🙂  It’s great to be involved in this group.  We are now building relationships with more and more people (including all three fine arts chairs at the high schools) and other community members.  Every time we meet, Angela and I come away feeling energized about our involvement in community and school efforts.

BYU Jumpstart Party

Tonight, Sarah attended a BYU Jumpstart Party at the home of an alumni here in Naperville (member of the Naperville 1st Ward).  They had a great time meeting many of the incoming freshmen they would be going to school with.  The main reason to pull them all together was to give them a pep talk about what to expect, and also get them acquainted with others from the area so they would feel like they had some automatic friends when they arrived on campus.

Sarah Starts 2nd Job!

Today Sarah started her second job!  We are very excited for her and with 2 jobs, she should be able to make enough money to almost cover her first year of school (with the savings she had already)!  She is being a nanny for the neighbor of some friends in our ward.  There are 2 kids, one 8 and one 12.  With the kids being that age, it shouldn’t be too hard for her to do.  🙂  Most of what she will be doing is keeping them safe, taking them to activities that they have to be to, ensuring they get 1 hour of reading time per day, and keeping the house clean.

Good luck with the job, Sarah!   🙂
