Sweet 16! Nope… No Car!

WOW!  It’s hard to believe it!  Sarah turned 16 today!  It’s amazing how fast time flies!  It was just yesterday that we were poor, struggling, college students bathing our little Sarah in our kitchen sink when she was only 3 months old!  🙂

Sarah-16BDay-2Brittany planned a GREAT surprise party for Sarah!  She invited a bunch of Sarah’s friends and planned everything.  She even called them all on the phone, extended the invitation, cleaned up the basement, decorated, got all the kids situated, and led the surprise when Sarah got home from a “shopping” trip with mom!  🙂  Sarah had no clue and was VERY surprised!

We really love Sarah’s choice of friends.  They are great people and Sarah is lucky to have them.  they are supportive of her and we know that when she is with them, she is in good places.

Brittany had some games planned which they did, after introducing each other, saying one word that described Sarah to them, and then their favorite food.  After the games, we ate cake and ice cream and hung out and had a great time!

Sarah-16BDay-1

After the games, we got a group picture of everyone that came (sorry to the couple that had to slip out before and we didn’t get you in the pictures)!  🙁

Sarah-16BDay-3

After everyone left, we cleaned up all the popcorn, pretzels, and other miscellaneous items all over the basement floor, and then had our little family celebration.  We were so full of cake, ice cream, and junk food, that we didn’t really have a proper dinner.  🙂  Most of us just ate a few small bites of leftovers or had a bowl of cereal.

Sarah spent the next half-hour responding to all the happy birthday wishes on Facebook and e-mail.  🙂  Carmen and Marta even saw on Tuenti that it was Sarah’s birthday and sent her well wishes from Spain.  🙂

Many had asked if Sarah was getting a car for her birthday and the answer is (and has always been) no.  🙂  She has about 15 more hours of driving left before she can get her license, and we will probably look into getting some kind of car soon, but we’re not sure.  What scares us even more than Sarah driving is that now she’s old enough to date!  😐  YIKES!  We’ll cross those bridges when we get there, but until then, I’ll be at home polishing up my gun!  🙂

Happy Sweet 16 Sarah!

SCORE!!!

Zach-Soccer-ScoreToday was Zachary’s first full soccer game.  The last 3 weeks have been spent in clinics and scrimmages for the Kindergarten-age kids.  The team has become MUCH better since the first week they practiced!  🙂  Zachary’s team won 5-2 and ZACHARY SCORED A GOAL!!!  🙂  He was playing fullback and got the ball.  There wasn’t anyone on his team in front of him to pass it to (not like he would have known to do that)  🙂  so he took the ball all the way down past the defenders and scored!  It was awesome!  He was SO happy and we couldn’t believe it!  He talked about it all the way home.  It’s really fun to coach these little kids.  There’s no pressure and the whole thing is all about having fun!  Go Zach!

Cross Country, Huck Finn Debate, and IMEA…

Brittany had a good run today in the Aurora “City of Lights” tournament with multiple school districts participating.  They ran all the 7th and 8th grade girls together.  Still Middle School’s 7th grade girls took 1st, 2nd, and 4th overall and beat everyone by a huge margin.  Brittany came in 57th of 230 runners.  She felt much better than she did yesterday during her meet where she was sick to her stomach before even running.

Sarah is very glad to be done with her day today!  They had a tough debate today in English where they had to argue whether or not Huck Finn by Mark Twain should be banned from schools or not.  She was assigned to be an attorney to argue that the book should be banned.  The judges there were a couple members of the community, a member of the school board, and the principal from Neuqua High School.  Unfortunately, their side lost (as did all the debates arguing against Huck Finn).  It was a tough argument, but they had a good time doing it.

Sarah also auditioned today for IMEA (Illinois Music Educator’s Association) participation.  She said she played her flute selections pretty well and so now we just wait and see if she made it.  It’s a VERY tough competition.  Brittany made it as a member of Honors Chorus, but unfortunately, she didn’t make it with her violin.  Maybe next year.  The main reason they audition is for experience.

Metea High School Dedication!

Today the high school had it’s official dedication ceremony.  I went with Sarah, Kirstyn, and Zachary.  They left the decorations up from the dance last night and that added a nice touch!  The gym was filled and the program was very nice.  The auditorium is not quite finished yet so the gym had to do.  They had musical selections and remarks from many community and district leaders such as the Mayor of Aurora, the School Board President, the District Superintendent, and the Architects of the school.  The principal did a wonderful job conducting and presiding at the ceremony.  We knew all three groups that accepted the building on behalf of the PTSA, the Music Boosters, and the Athletic Boosters!

After the ceremony, we had cookies and punch and then Sarah gave Kirstyn and Zachary a tour.  They went and saw all her classes and we had some great conversations with some of the teachers and parents we knew that were there.

We are VERY excited to be a part of this new high school opening.  Despite all of Sarah’s initial concerns, she is extremely excited to be a part of the Metea Valley High School Mustang community and loves going to school there!

Soccer, Football, and Homecoming!

Today was an incredibly busy day!  This morning Zachary had soccer practice, and he is doing a little better.  The team at least didn’t bunch together like bees around honey, so that is good!  🙂  The head coach wasn’t there, so it fell upon me as assistant coach to get the team practicing the drills.  We only had 4 show today, so when we scrimmaged against another team, we had to borrow a player.  I hope it’s not like that come game day our first game next week!  😐

SarahHomecomingBand

After soccer practice, we went and watched Sarah in the marching band before and during the homecoming football game.  As usual, the band did a GREAT job!  Right before halftime, it started pouring rain and everyone got soaked!  The poor marching band was out on the field doing their show in a downpour but had a wonderful, wet time!  We ended up leaving right after that.  Benjamin was soaked to the bone, but was having a fun time catching raindrops in his mouth!

When we got home, we all dried off, had hot chocolate to warm us up, and then worked to get ready to get Sarah off to the Homecoming Dance!  She and some friends decided to go together like they did last year.  They all met over at one of  Sarah’s friends homes, had dinner, and then got ready and went.  They had a great time!  Sarah brought a bottle of sparkling grape juice to the dinner and one of the girls thought it was wine!  🙂  Crazy that they would think that we, who don’t drink, would send alcohol to a group of underage kids!  🙂

The commons area in the high school was decorated up nicely and it wasn’t overcrowded like last year (due to the fact that there are only two grades in the school this year.  Sarah came home happy!

Brittany Cross Country Team Picture

We finally got the Still Middle School Cross Country Team picture and here it is!

StillCrossCountryTeam2009

The team is much smaller than it was last year due to the fact that Still was split into two middle schools with the high school and boundary changes.  Many of her friends from last year are now at the new middle school.  The 8th grade boys team this year only has 1 runner!  😐

Zachary Soccer Practice and Pictures

Zach-SoccerPictures-1

Zachary with two of his teammates waiting for team pictures.

Zach had soccer practice this morning and then team pictures this afternoon.  It’s really fun being their coach, and it is quite humorous too!  During the clinic and practice, the expert leader teaches them some things and then we go back and practice.  It’s funny to watch them.  During the scrimmage part of the clinic, they forget everything they learned and bunch up together like bees on huney and move around the field, kicking anything that moves!  🙂  It drives the leader of the clinic nuts, but they’re just in kindergarten.  They’ll learn.

Soccer pictures were really quite cute.  Only 5 of the 7 kids showed up so the pictures were very small.  While they were waiting, they couldn’t help jumping in the water, running all over, and pulling all the loose threads off their socks!  🙂

Sox Win! Great Time at the Ball Park

Tonight we had a church activity (HP Group) going to a Chicago White Sox game!  A friend of ours in our ward works for Waste Management and they have a box suite at the park.  We hung out, ate food, watched the game, and had a great time!  The Sox won 2-0.  It wasn’t close to the game you went to see, Carmen (the famous no-hitter), and even though they don’t have a chance to go to the post-season, it was great to see!  🙂

Sarah Inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society

Sarah-Tri-M-InductionTonight Sarah was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society at Metea Valley High School. The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for middle/junior high and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Through more than 5,500 chartered chapters, Tri-M has helped thousands of young people provide years of service through music in schools throughout the world.

What a wonderful opportunity Sarah was given to be recognized in this society and to have the ability to serve others through membership.  She is loving both band class and marching band this year and loves being a marching leader.  It’s great to be at the football games when they announce her name as a marching leader to everyone there!  🙂

Last Leadership Forum (RLF) Session. Sniff… Sniff… :-(

Today I finished up my last session of the Midwest Regional Leadership Forum (RLF)!  We had a wonderful session and had great speakers and book discussions.  I can’t believe I read 35 books like that in 9 months!  I won’t miss that much reading, but the friends I have made and the experiences I had are invaluable and something I will never forget.  I always know that I have 39 other people that I can reach out to when I have leadership questions, problems I am trying to overcome at work, or anything like that.  It’s amazing how close-knit you become.

At the end of the session, we all had a group hug, a group picture, and said our good-byes until November when we will all meet together again in Seattle for SIMposium (the Society for Information Management’s annual conference) where we will officially “graduate” and have our last official meeting together.  We have a “giveback” presentation we are working on for the conference and it should be GREAT!  I am in charge of compiling a slide video with music highlighting lessons learned, quotes, and outstanding thoughts we collected over the last 9 months.  It’s turning out quite well.

Many of us that live in the immediate area (Chicagoland and Southern Wisconsin) are going to get back together every other month or so to discuss a book, have an activity or something like that.  This will keep us together and communicating.  We also have our LinkedIn and Facebook groups as well.  I would recommend this leadership program to ANYONE!  It’s one of the best work- and life-related experiences I have ever had!

Zachary Starts Soccer!

Zach-Soccer-1st-DayToday was quite the day.  Zachary had his first day of soccer!  He was SOOOO excited to go this morning!  Angela volunteered me to be the assistant coach so I was involved today as well!  🙂  It’s been a LONG time since I played soccer but it really doesn’t matter that much with kids in Kindergarten.  He looked so cute in his new socks, shin guards, jersey, black shorts kicking his ball around!  🙂

The first three weeks of soccer for them are actually clinics where experts come and teach the kids what to do.  The coaches then take their teams to a designated area and practice with them. It’s really funny to see how much they listen.  There are many daydreamers in the groups.  🙂  Our team has 8 kids and one of Zachary’s friends is on the team with him and she is excited.  They practiced side foot kicks, shoelace kicks, trapping the ball, and dribbling it.  We need to practice a LOT!  🙂  After the clinic, the kids play against other teams there and it is absolutely hilarious to watch.  They swarm around the field like a bunch of bees kicking at anything that moves (including each other).  Some kids reach in and grab the ball and run with it becuase they want to have “their turn” to kick the ball.  🙂

Although we need to practice a bunch, Zach is still very excited and can’t wait until next week so he can play again!  Go Zach!

Go Mustangs!

Sarah-MVHSBand-Football-918-1Tonight was a great night for Sarah and the Metea Valley Marching Mustangs!  It was 8th Grade Night, and so all the 8th grade students from the middle schools that go to Metea came and rehearsed with the high school band.  Sarah got to be in charge of some additional people and show the 8th graders how it’s done.  She did a GREAT job!

Sarah-MVHSBand-Football-918-2They performed their pre-game show with the 8th graders wonderfully and were very crisp and clean as usual for their halftime show.  They looked very sharp!  We love the new uniforms.

The whole family was there to support her.  Ben clapped as they were playing and tried to wave to Sarah who of course didn’t see him because he is so little.  The crowd was really large and almost filled the stadium.  Not bad for a school with only Freshmen and Sophomores in it – the football game attendance didn’t hurt either!  🙂

The football game wasn’t bad either!  They played Larkin and beat them 43-8!  The team played great!  I was taking the kids home a little early  (Kirstyn, Zach, and Ben) while Angela and Brittany were helping out the band, but Zach didn’t want go until he got to give a high-five to his seminary carpool buddy, Jarrett House (Team Captain and QB).  Zach found him after the game and got his wish!  It was very cute to see the little guy with this big padded-up football player.  Jarrett was excited to see him too!
