Zach’s Football Practice Starts

We got a call on Saturday night from Zachary’s football coach…  Zachary’s team name is the Broncos and he practices twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8pm.  He is very excited and can’t wait to get out there and play.  We have to laugh, because he doesn’t hit very hard at all, and runs kind-of slow.  We will have to work with him on this!  🙂

He is so fun to watch out there.  All the kids are pretty funny as they haven’t played football before and they don’t really know what to do.  Watching them do jumping jacks makes me laugh!  🙂

Pep Band for Freshman Orientation

Today Brittany had her freshman orientation up at Metea High School and both her and Sarah played in the pep band for it.  They had a great time!

Brittany became even more familiar with the school and found her classrooms.  Then came the best part of it for her…  THE DANCE!  Sarah and her friend Taylor stayed there and hung out with Brittany and Taylor’s sister Lexi (who is also a freshman).  They had a blast getting to know people.  We’re not sure how much she actually danced, however!  🙂

To Hit or NOT to Hit… That is the Question!

Zach’s second day of football clinic was today and he liked it even more than yesterday.  It was MUCH cooler and they actually got to tackle each other.  It’s funny to see how hard (or not how hard) they hit each other.  We have to laugh at how tentative the boys are…

All the boys were really excited to tackle and be tackled.  You would think that because they grow up hitting things, tackling siblings, and rough-housing around, they would be pros by now…  NOT!  🙂  They run up to each other, slow down and then think about what they have to do, not wanting to hurt each other.  🙂  We know that Zach will get better as time goes on.  We told him that the sweet little loving boy does not have to be shown on the field when he is trying to tackle someone.  We told him to just go out there and play hard!

We’ll see how  he does when he gets together with whatever team he is on next week.  Maybe the coach will teach Zach how to have some hair on his chest.  🙂

Go Zach!  You’ll do GREAT this year!

Zach’s First Football Clinic!!!

Today was the first day of the “Hitters” clinic for football.  Zachary was so excited to go all day and couldn’t wait until he could go.  He got dressed up in his football pads and such 2 hours before it was time to go, and we had to get him undressed so he wouldn’t spill or wipe stuff all over his new clean  uniform.  We wanted the grass to get him dirty, not his food.  🙂

When we got to the practice field, it was very hot and humid and we were sweating like crazy before the clinic even started.  He was a little trooper and did a great job!  It was really funny to see around 500+ kids that had never played before working with coaches in their small groups.

They started out with stretching exercises and practiced leg work to get quick on their feet.  Due to the heat, they had to stop and get water every 15 minutes or so.  Zach would come over to me because he can’t quite get his own helmet off his head yet!  🙂  He would drink and then go back, ready for more.  They practiced hitting pads and tackling.  The coaches kept driving it into them that they had to “hit, grab, drop, and roll” when trying to tackle and that when they were hitting, they couldn’t grab.  There were some confused faces on these little kids just going into first grade.  🙂

By the time they finished, Zach was totally exhausted, hot, and sopping wet from sweat!  The coaches promised a better day tomorrow because it will be cooler and less humid.  In addition to that, they actually get to hit and tackle each other tomorrow!  🙂  Zach was excited about that!  He’s not exactly the most agressive kid, but we’ll practice with him and teach him that it’s OK to hit hard in football!  🙂  Great job Zach!

Feed My Starving Children

Today, we had a church service project at Feed My Starving Children.  We signed up for two 2-hour sessions and our ward needed to provide 180 people to work packing meals for starving children around the globe. (90 people in each session).  Angela signed me, Sarah, and Kirstyn up for both sessions (9:00am-11:00am and 11:30am-1:30pm).  She signed herself up for the morning session while Brittany watched Ben, and then swapped with Brittany for the second session.  We were very worried that we wouldn’t have enough people to fill the sessions.  Only 2 weeks ago, we only had about 46 signed up for each.  Everyone invited their friends and neighbors, however, and we ended up having 92 people for the first session, and 98 people for the second session.

We had a blast!  During the first session, we packed 90 boxes of meals, which fed 53 children for an entire year!  The second session we were bound and determined to outdo the first session.  We ended up packaging 112 boxes which fed 66 kids for a year.  Overall, in both sessions, we packed 202 boxes with 43,632 meals, which would feed 119 kids for an entire year!

We really love doing this as an activity!  Brittany (as in an earlier post) came here for her birthday, and has done so a couple times in the past few years.  The Metea Marching Band will be there on Monday doing it again!  Overall, our family has been involved quite a bit in the past month!

Ana Goes Back To Spain

Today Ana went back to Spain.  Kirstyn was especially sad.  She really liked Ana and had a great time with her while Sarah and Brittany were at camp.  It’s weird that it’s been an entire year since Carmen went back to Spain last summer.  Time has really flown!

We are glad that the Gaul family asked us if we could take Ana for the final week she was here.  We look forward to keeping in contact with her and seeing how she’s doing.

Girls Home, Concert in the Park

Today Sarah and Brittany came home after having a great time at camp.  They were exhausted, but couldn’t stop talking about the great experiences they had there.  It looks like that they will be going to the same camp next year and are excited about it.  Angela wants to go to camp with them next year, because all three girls will be going.  It will be Sarah’s last year, Brittany’s fourth year, and Kirstyn’s first year.

When I got home from work, we ate dinner and then went to Phillips Park nearby to watch the American Legion Band perform…

Before we left the park, Ana grabbed the camera and wanted a family picture taken with her.

After that we drove Wendy’s and got frosties!  Ana hadn’t had one yet and so we thought since it was her last evening with us, we would treat her to something awesome!  When Carmen stayed with us, it was her favorite!  True to what we thought, Ana absolutely loved them!  🙂

Girls Camp Experience, Field Museum Trip

This past Monday, Sarah and Brittany got up EARLY and took off to girls camp, and so far, are having a BLAST!   Yesterday, I drove down to Camp Cary down in Lafayette, IN to join them for Bishop’s night and testimony meeting.  Bishop and I got down there at about the same time and ate dinner with the girls, had a great time together, and enjoyed listening to them bear their testimonies of what they knew to be true.  We have some incredible young women in our ward!

It was hot and humid and so I decided not to set up my tent.  I ended up sleeping in the car which was very comfortable and I didn’t have to worry about a sopping wet tent to dry out this morning!  🙂

Today, I got up early and helped in the kitchen with breakfast.  I helped make pancakes (which tasted great) for 105 girls and 31 leaders, after which I helped do the dishes for all of them!  😐  I’m dished out!  By the time we got done with everything, it was time for the canoe trip (which was the real reason I was down there to help out).  Too bad I don’t have any pictures as we had a great time on the river!

We put the canoes in on a slow-flowing river that was actually pretty shallow in many places.  I was there along with another leader there to help out.  We ended up canoeing about 9 miles, although since most of the girls had never canoed before, some of them probably paddled close to 15 miles due to going back and forth across the river, rather than straight down it.  We had a couple of snags where one canoe capsized and got stuck in the current under a log by bank.  It was all we could do to get it out and we were exhausted by the time we finished!  We had only one other such incident that actually ended up bending the bottom of the canoe a little bit.  I showed the girls how to empty a capsized canoe and get back in it when they swamped, and helped many girls out of too shallow water where their canoe got stuck.  When we finally came to the bridge where we finished the trip, there were shouts fo joy from the girls!  🙂  Although I was completely worn out and sore from the trip (I know I’ll be aching in the morning) due to lifting capsized canoes, pulling them out from log messes, and having a canoe all to myself (much more energy drain than having 2 people), I had a great time!

After we got all the canoes back to camp, I changed clothes and left so I could get home before  dark.  I hit a storm on the way home that was so bad, I couldn’t even see more than about 15-20 feet in front of the car.  The lightning was so close and so bad that the hairs on my arms and head started to stand on end.  I’ve only had that happen one other time and it’s really creepy!  It didn’t last too long, and by the time I got home, everything was sunny and dry.

While I was at camp with Sarah and Brittany today, Angela, the rest of the kids, and Ana went downtown to the field museum and had a blast!  : – )

There’s always new things to see whenever we go there.  Ana had a blast!  She said that her favorite excursions have been those where they have gone into downtown Chicago.  She comes from a small town and loves the big city feel.

A Bit of Spain Back In Our Home!

Tonight we welcomed a Spanish student in our home for the week.  Ken and Angie Gaul and their family who hosted again this year went on vacation to Disney World and asked us if we would take their student, Ana Espallargas for the week.  We gladly accepted.  We wish we could have done the month-long hosting and had Carmen with us again, but we were very excited for the small opportunity.  This summer has been crazy and we couldn’t host becuase we would have been gone (either the entire family or most of it) for almost 3 of the 4 weeks.  Ana is great and her English is very good.  Kirstyn is especially excited becuase tomorrow Brittany and Sarah are going to girl’s camp and so she gets Ana all to herself until Thursday!  🙂

Trip to Nauvoo and Pageant

Today we decided to take a trip to Nauvoo to visit the temple and to attend the Nauvoo pageant.  The weather was threatening when we got up but decided to take a leap of faith and go anyway.  We left home at 5:30am and drove down.  It rained like crazy for most of the trip down and we were a little concerned.  With the rain as heavy as it was (we later found out that many of the tollways were closed in the Chicago area due to flooding), Sarah didn’t really feel like driving!  🙂

Angela and I attended a temple session at 10am and then met the girls and Rained like crazy the entire time.  Angela and I did 10am session at temple and then met the kids outside for a picnic.  It hadn’t rained too hard there so things were pretty dry.  After eating, Angela and the kids went and saw “Just Plain Anna Amanda” (a fun live production for the kids) while I went and changed out of my suit and saved seats for the pageant.  I just got back to the van when it started pouring huge raindrops!  Whew!  🙂

After that, we didn’t feel like being out in the bad weather, so we checked into hotel, and went swimming.  We had a fun time, except the pool had a huge amound of chlorine in it.  It felt like you were breathing bleach!  😐  Ben is like a fish out of water and we had to watch him close becuase he would just run and jump in anywhere, even if you weren’t there to catch him.  Once he jumped and we barely saw him.  He was underwater for about 3 seconds but came up laughing!  Yikes!

After we dried off and our eyes stopped hurting from the chlorine, we for quick dinner in Fort Madison before the pageant.  Sarah, Kirstyn, and the boys were starving and wanted McDonalds, so we stopped there.  We then kept driving and looking for a local place for myself, Angela, and Brittany.  Our patience paid off and we found the BEST place!  It’s called the Fort and famous for the original Wallyburger.  It was a real hole-in-the-wall, but we decided to try it out.  We were a little nervous going in there (corner, glass windows all around, 12 barstools, and 5 tables), but our opinion of the place changed quickly.

We went in and Angela asked the patrons if the food was any good.  They had glowing recommendations and we started talking about where we were from, etc.  It turned out that they are a cash only establishment, and we didn’t know if we had enough cash.  Immediately, all of the people there said they’d pitch in to cover what we didn’t have!  🙂  Can you believe that?  It gets better, however…  We did find enough cash, but not enough for a tip and she said that she didn’t mind, just as long as we came back.  She even was ready to throw in a complementary order of fries!  🙂

We ordered 2 Wallyburgers and fries and while we waited, they offered us a sample of their pulled pulled pork and that was outstanding too!  We watched as they made the Wallyburgers and it looked GOOD!  The Wallyburger is a full pound of meat!  The patty is huge and after the cook put it on the grill, he covered it with a pan lid to keep in the juices!  He then covered it with cheese, onions and mushrooms.  YUM!

Angela and Brittany split one and I had one by myself.  I could only eat about half!  🙂  We had some great conversations with the folks there and as we got ready to go, the guy sitting next to me (Robert) bought us 3 pieces of pie to go (1 of each)…  pumpkin, strawberry-rhubarb, and cherry!  We couldn’t believe it!  We got his name and address and will send him something nice from Chicago.  🙂

There’s not a lot of places around like that anymore!  We felt bad becuase we went in there to get food-to-go and ended up sitting down and eating, while the rest of the kids were with Sarah in the van!  🙂  Sarah wasn’t too happy, but we sure felt full and had a wonderful experience!  We’re DEFINTELY going back there again!

It was raining by the time we got back to Nauvoo and were sopping wet by the time the pageant started, but it let up a little and there was no thunder and lightning in the immediate area, so the pageant went on as planned.  It was wonderful, and we thoroughly enjoyed it!  The mosquitoes enjoyed eating us too!

About mid-way through the pageant, the rain stopped and things started drying out (including us)!  We felt the spirit, even though we were soaked.  By the time we got back to the hotel, we were wet and dead tired, but were very happy!

We’ll all sleep well tonight!  🙂

Football Registration for Zach!

Today was a BIG day for Zachary…  He finished registering and picked up his shoulder pads for football!  He and I went over to St. Raphael school early to get in line to wait for registration.  We underestimated the wait and should have gotten there 30 minutes earlier.  When we arrived, the line was almost all the way around the school!  Come to find out that the program is so popular, there are about 3000 kids that participate!  🙂  We were in line about 5 minutes before it started raining!  😐  This wasn’t a light sprinkle, and soon we were soaked!  A nice guy in front of us let us stand under his umbrella for which we were very thankful!

When we got in the building, we had a first year player pep-talk from one of the guys in charge of the program and then went and picked up Zach’s materials and shoulder pads.  He was SO excited, and couldn’t wait to get dressed!

Seeing him in his uniform was almost a sad thing because he is growing up so fast!  It was really cute and it was fun to have him try to tackle me.  He has a way to go before he can be a mean tackler!  🙂  He doesn’t hit very hard!  🙂  He has a camp coming up the first week of August and so he will learn a bunch of new things there.

Ben also wanted in on the action so he begged to get into Zachary’s uniform as well.  It was hillarious!  🙂

He so much wants to be like his big brother!  It was funny becuase the helmet was so heavy that Ben couldn’t keep his head up straight!  🙂  You’ll get your turn, Ben!
